I hope I'm putting this post in the right place :-)
Anyone have any information on David Kitto (Kitteau)? I've contacted Reuben and Curtis/Mike already and thought I'd see if anyone had any other information.
Depending on which Agency I look at, he was either born around 1872 (Santee) or in the 1850's (Yankton). He died 5/30/1923 (I have a state file number - can that get me anywhere?) in Charles Mix Co, SD. He is listed on the Santee Census in 1885 with his grandfather, Kaugimdoka and in 1887 with Thomas & Julia Rouillard as a step-son (found the same information under Families in the Santee Mission Book #1). I also found his name on the 1889 Standing Rock Agency list dividing up the Sioux Nation as Sunkawaste (Pretty Dog - 33 yrs) along with Kaugibdoka (Male Crow - 52 yrs). Same year, 1889, there is a Good Dog or Horse, 20 yrs, Shon Cah Wash ta listed with White Whirlwind (who would be his father-in-law) at the Rosebud agency to Brule No. 1.
According to the testimony of his wife at his time of death in 1923, he was married 4 times:
1. Itoyepetawin - separated - 3 children died as infants
2. Wisiha - she died - Jennie Standing Buffalo, Rosa (Rose) Kitteau
3. Gioa - separated
4. Mary White Whirlwind - William, Emily (Amelia), Agnes, Bessie, Mercy and Benjamin.
The children that were living at the time of his death were Jenny Standing Buffalo, Agnes Kitteau and Benjamin Kitteau.
On the Report on Heirship, it lists the Yankton agency but also states (Submitted from Winnebago, Neb). Does this mean anything?
Under real property, it lists David Kitteau, Rose Kitteau, and Mercy Kitto with their id #'s all close together. Any chance of getting more info from the agency with their ID#? I believe Rose and Mercy were his daughters.
Also on the Family history of David's death information, is lists that his wifes parents were Wanniyomniska of Lower Brule and Qinwin of Lower Brule. On Mary's death certificate, her father is listed as James White Whirlwind, born in SD and mother's maiden name was unknown, born in SD. Mary was born in 1869 and died 1/21/1934 in Charles Mix County.
Wah me no yo me no Scah, White Whirlwind is listed on the 1889 document at the Rosebud agency dividing the Sioux nation, 30 years old, Band - Loafer. In 1890, Wanmneyomneska, White Whirlwind, age 35, Band No 5, at the Lower Brule Agency. In 1892, White Whirlwind is 38 yrs, agreed to move to Rosebud from Lower Brule. In 1898, James Whirlwind was on the census of Indians on the Rosebud Reservation who consent to the Lower Brule Indians recieving allotments on the Rosebud. They are living on lands South of the White River within the Rosebud Reservation. I have a 1910 US Census listing a White Whirlwind in Dawes, NE, 66 with Mary (wife) and Jess (daug). Also, in 1910 there is a James White Whirlwind listed on a marriage records that is 62 from Dixon, Tripp, SD married Emily Poordog, 64 on 8/13/1910.
Can anyone shed some light for me? Would love to know name translations, siblings of David, parents of David Kitto, or anything at all.
Thanks
